Buildings must be properly protected against fire<\/h4>\n

At present, the regulations setting out all the requirements that\u00a0<\/span>buildings must meet<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>to be\u00a0<\/span>properly protected against fire<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>are those of the Technical Building Code (CTE), specifically in the\u00a0<\/span>Basic Document SI “Safety in the event of Fire”.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Buildings must have fire protection equipment and installations. Materials must be fire-resistant. Extinguishers, fire hose reels, etc. must be properly signposted. Signs must be photoluminescent.<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n
\n

The aim of this basic “Safety in the event of fire” standard is to\u00a0<\/span>reduce to acceptable limits the risk of users of a building suffering harm<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>from an accidental fire, as a result of the characteristics of its design, construction, use and maintenance. To meet this aim, buildings\u00a0<\/span>shall be designed, built, maintained and used<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>in such a way that, in the event of fire,\u00a0<\/span>the basic requirements are met.<\/strong><\/p>\n

For this reason, all buildings must have\u00a0<\/span>fire protection equipment and installations<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>such as portable extinguishers, fire hose reels, firefighting lifts, external hydrants or automatic extinguishing systems.<\/p>\n

Likewise, the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of all installations, materials and equipment must comply with the provisions of the “Regulation on Fire Protection Installations”.<\/p>\n

One of the requirements that properties must meet is, for example, that buildings must be\u00a0<\/span>divided into fire compartments<\/strong>, each with a maximum permitted area. Any area whose intended use is different from and ancillary to the main use of the building or establishment of which it forms part must constitute a separate fire compartment.<\/p>\n

In addition,\u00a0<\/span>the materials<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>used in construction\u00a0<\/span>must have a specified fire resistance<\/strong>, as must the walls, ceilings and doors bounding fire compartments.<\/p>\n

As regards the signposting of all fire protection equipment,<\/strong> point 2 of DB SI4 states that\u00a0<\/span>extinguishers, fire hose reels, external hydrants, manual call points and triggering devices for extinguishing systems must be signposted with signs measuring 210 x 210<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>mm where the viewing distance does not exceed 10 m, with signs\u00a0<\/span>measuring 420\u00d7420 mm<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>where the viewing distance\u00a0<\/span>is between 10 and 20<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>m, and\u00a0<\/span>with signs measuring 594\u00d7594 mm where the distance is 20 to 30 metres<\/strong>.
